In the middle section of this book, Alex Rider is faced with some difficult decisions. For one, he is told by Scorpia that MI6 turned on him and that he cannot trust them anymore. Then, Julia Rothman offered him an assassin class where he could learn and become a better spy.

Alex is given a blueprint of Scorpia's facility in Venice. He has the option to either turn his back on his friends in the U.K. or turn his back on his new friends in Scorpia. Rider has many things to consider and this becomes the conflict of the story. If he decides to join Scorpia, he will be wanted by the police and he will be an assassin who kills in cold blood. If he turns on Scorpia, then Julia Rothman will have him executed. Alex is at a crossroads and he doesn't know what to do. So he joins Scorpia under MI6's permission and takes gadgets to their base. Then, he reports back to the United Kingdom to give them intel on the base. This is a good conflict and good story because you never know what Rider's next move is going to be. He is so intelligent that he thinks outside of the box in ways you couldn't imagine for a 15 year old. This is why he is such a good spy, because no one expects much out of him.
